Addressing Rural Access to Bystander CPR and AED Classes

Free CPR and AED Training in Afton Open to the Public May 10

Afton, 5/2/2025 – Hope’s Legacy Equine Rescue is excited to announce a partnership with The Compress and Shock Foundation to offer a free CPR and AED class to the public on May 10 at 11am at Hope’s Legacy’s Castle Rock Farm, 2080 Castle Rock Road, Afton. This training is open to anyone age 13 or older to expand access to this critical skill across communities with limited access – including rural areas throughout Virginia.

The class is offered during Hope’s Legacy’s Open House, giving participants a chance to visit with the adoptable equines from 10am to 1pm as we build awareness of cardiac care.

The Compress and Shock Foundation’s mission is to bring free and equitable access to CPR and AED education across all communities, with a specific dedication to those communities most adversely affected by cardiac arrest due to race, ethnicity, primary language, or access to healthcare education. The Compress and Shock Foundation offers a dual-purpose educational model that delivers grant-funded AEDs in conjunction with free CPR and AED training.

An AED is a life-saving device designed to deliver a controlled electrical shock to individuals experiencing sudden cardiac arrest, potentially restoring normal heart rhythm and significantly increasing the chances of survival before professional medical help arrives. AEDs are safe and easy to use; offering verbal instructions to the rescuers and only shocking if a life-threatening heart rhythm is detected.

All sites and class times can be viewed on our website: compressandshock.org. Any questions can be sent to our email: Compressandshock@gmail.com
