For new and experienced owners

Here is a comprehensive care guide from the American Association of Equine Practitioners: Care Guidelines

Pez arrived to HLER in Summer 2024 as a body score of 1. She is a super senior (around 30) with very few grinding teeth left, but through soaked feed and chaff, Pez gained weight and pranced back to health! Pez was adopted by an HLER volunteer and lives with another HLER alum, Rose, in a lovely pasture.

Do you currently own or are interested in adopting a senior horse?

Senior horses make wonderful companions!

Often senior horses have lived with many other horses in their lives and been handled - they know the routines! Our senior horses have a lot of love to give to a new retirement home.

With age comes changes in their body - like loss of molars or mild arthritis. Unmanaged, these changes will impact senior horse health.

However, with some management like medication or simply soaking , senior equines, like Pez pictured to the left, can live happily in their golden years. Read more on senior horse management here.
