Hope’s Legacy’s Intake Barn

Join us in building the future of Hope’s Legacy with our first major construction project, an 8 stall Intake Barn. Contact us about leaving a legacy with a naming opportunity. Construction on the Intake Barn began March of 2023!

Why this Barn is Needed:

1. Provide a safer environment for our care givers. Our veterinarians, volunteers, and farrier currently work outdoors. A large barn with a central aisle and cross ties provides shade, protection from the elements, secure footing, better visibility, and more.

2. To house equines from large rescue operations.

3. Provide stall rest for injured or starved horses.

4. Control an equine’s food intake. Separating horses into stalls for feeding insures they receive the proper nutrition and supplements.

5. Quarantine/separate one group of equines from others to prevent the spread of contagious disease.

6. Provide housing for our Farm Manager to live on site and space for veterans attending our Hope’s Heroes Program to stay in. The second story of our Intake Barn includes two separate living spaces.

Who the Intake Barn Helps:

1. Equines in Virginia: an 8-stall barn increases our overall housing capacity by 26%. With an average stay of 165 days, the Intake Barn means we can help 18 more horses and donkeys every year.

2. Equine Owners: who need help with their animals. The typical owner surrendering their animals to Hope’s Legacy is female, over 60, low- to middle- or fixed-income, owns multiple equines, and is experiencing a financial or physical crisis, or the death of the equine caregiver.

3. Animal Control Officers: most animal control agencies in Virginia do not have a place to house at-risk large animals.
